Richard H. Neubauer

1943 - 2026

Richard H. Neubauer, 83, of Pratt, Kansas, passed away on August 25, 2026. Richard was born January 28, 1943, in Staten Island, New York, to Bernhard and Alice Neubauer. Growing up, Jess Holt was an important person in his life as well — someone who left a lasting mark on the man Richard became.

To say Richard was independent from an early age would be a bit of an understatement. At just 15, he left home in Missouri and headed to Leoti, Kansas, to work on a custom cutting crew, kicking off a lifetime spent working the land. He went on to work with Jaeger Farms, Brookover, Masterland, Hitch Feeders, and Great Plains Alfalfa, earning a reputation as someone who worked hard and knew his trade inside and out.

He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps with the 1st Battalion 11th Marines from May 4, 1964, to May 3, 1967, achieving the rank of Corporal (E4) and serving in Vietnam. His service was recognized with the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. In 1964, Richard married JoAnn, and together they raised three children: Darcie Howk (Dan), Theresa “Treebob” Whatley (Dave), and Jaret Holt Neubauer (Shawnee). Years later, he found lasting love with Debra, his wife and partner of 45 years, who brought two more great kids into his life that he loved as his own: Nikki “Nike” Kruse (Lynn) and Shannon Triplett (Laura).

He was one of a big family himself, preceded in death by siblings, Mary, Charlie, Jimmy, Poncho, and David; and survived by siblings, Bernie and Denny.

Richard was blessed with grandchildren who brought him mild frustration but mostly great joy — Josh, Jurnee, Megan, Darrell ( Kimmy), Anthony (Becca), Stephen (Jordan), Chase (Skyler), Riker, and Oliver — along with several greatgrandchildren who lit up his world.

When he wasn’t working, Richard could usually be found bass fishing or adding to his lure collection — he took great pride in both. In his later years, he enjoyed long drives in the country with those closest to his heart, sharing stories of his wilder youth along the way. He also enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino and never turned down a good bet. Animals always held a special place in his life as well, especially his beloved Fritz, Buford, Gus, and Hank.

Above all, Richard was a great storyteller. He’d get so tickled by his own story that he could barely get the words out through his laughter, and before you knew it, you’d be laughing right along with him. It was a gift that helped him build so many long-time friendships over the years — the kind that lasted a lifetime.

Richard will be deeply missed by his family and the countless friends whose lives he touched.

Visitation will be Friday, August 28th from 5-8pm at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City KS. The Service will take place Saturday August 29th 10am at Leoti Cemetery, Leoti KS. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Kansas Honor Flight in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
